Grand Oakes Tag! You're It! AKC DN41849406
Source of information: Sue deGoesbriand (owner)
Age of Onset: 14 months Diagnostics: Examined, diagnosed and treated by a veterinary neurologist on the first day of seizures. Physical examination, medical interview, blood work and thyroid testing were done. Neurologist determined MRI was unnecessary and diagnosed Tag with Idiopathic Epilepsy. Date Added: 10 Mar 2019 |
Disease Progression: Tag first seized April 2016 at 14 months, having 5 generalized tonic clonic seizures in 12 hours. He was admitted to ICU, seen by the Neurologist and prescribed Phenobarbital. Seizures were well controlled for the next 12 months with only one incident in December 2016. Seizures restarted with a ferocity in April 2017 and have remained problematic and drug resistant to this day in spite of increases in Phenobarbital and cluster meds, and the addition of new drugs and treatments. Seizures are generalized tonic clonic, lasting about 1 minute, all with bladder release, occasionally with screaming. Usually unconscious for 2-4 minutes. Clustering is frequent with seizures happening in rapid succession over a period of 10-40 minutes. We have found no trigger for his seizures, they occur at random, typically anywhere from 4 to 36 days apart. As of Feb 2019 Tag is 4 years old and has been admitted to hospital three times for seizure control.
Treatment: Tag remains under the care of a veterinary neurologist and is seen regularly. Medications have increased over time and as of February 2019 are: DAILY: Phenobarbital (75g, twice daily) and Potassium Bromide (125mg in am, 250mg in pm). Zonisamide has been prescribed and will be started shortly. CLUSTER BUSTER: Levetiracetam and Diazepam. CBD oil started February 2018, 7mg TID Tag receives chiro, acupuncture and Reiki healing. Blood work and review by neurologist every 3-6 months. Ocular compression and ice packs when seizing. Fed commercially prepared raw diet. Receives a variety of gut supplements, fish oil, etc. PRESCRIPTION DRUG HISTORY: 2016 Apr 14 Phenobarbital 45mg, twice daily 2017 Apr 13 Levetiracetam 750mg for 4 days 2017 Apr 19 Phenobarbital 45mg am and 60mg pm 2017 May 29 Phenobarbital 60mg, twice daily 2017 Jul 31 Phenobarbital 75mg, twice daily 2017 Jul 31 Cluster Buster: Diazepam 20mg x 3; Levetiracetam 500mg, TID for 3 days 2017 Nov 07 Potassium Bromide added 250mg twice daily 2017 Nov 07 Diazepam 30mg x 3, Levetiracetam 1000mg to start, 500mg TID for 3 days 2018 Jan 16 Potassium Bromide reduced to 125mg in am, 250mg in pm 2019 Jan 09 Diazepam 40mg x 3, Levetiracetam 1250mg to start, 500mg TID for 2 days |
